Biography

Yahya Al-Samawi

Born in 1949, has been living as a political refugee in Australia. The author of more than eight collections, he has been largely concerned in his latest works with political themes, which address, among other issues, Iraq’s predicament in the years following the Gulf War and his opposition to the regime. Note his reference to the massacred homeland and the Tartars (a symbol used primarily for external invaders.)

1-

As small as an orange

Is my heart

But it holds

The world as a whole.

2-

You are not a sun

I am not a sunflower

So why does my heart

Repair to noone

But only towards you?

3-

I casted my bow

And my arrow as well

Raising my face

As a banner of surreder

So you; be the gallows

To lift me to the Heaven

Or be the bond

To tie me

To the Earth

For I never find

The bread of freedom

So pleasant

Without the kiln

Of my slavery to you.

 4-

You are alone

With no partner

In my heart

Which has two rooms

But it holds

Only one lover.

5-

Among my demise

At your absence

And my revival

At your presence

I am dangling

Hanged with a rope

Of my questions

Stared at

A passing tomorrow

And yesterday

Which hasn't come yet?

6-

Despite all these

Emaciated years,

Midday heat, blazes,

Refuge camps, exiles

My heart is still more greenish

Than all the orchards

Of the world.

7-

The madness of my heart

Is the sign

Of my brain's intactness.

 8-

Before each meeting

My heart adorns for you

With warmth,

It darkens

The pulse eyelids

It dyes its blood

With longing

Your water

But not my dust

Ripens the fields of my alphabet

How does the earth

Procreate new continents

Unless your nest

Nurses my sparrow?

9-

Oh! You who are so far

From me

Like the farness of

My heart to my hand

You are closer

Like the sun

To my eye

Let's set up the regality

Of satisfaction

To induct you

The Queen of my

Insanity regions.

 10-

Religion is Love

Love is Religion

They both are two lips

Fot one mouth

Is there a river

With one bank?

11-

Far away, far away

I casted you

Not to the depth of the sea

Or amaze of a forest

But deeper in my heart

Suppose you run away

But how to be able

To get over

The bars of my bones?

12-

All the rancors of the world

Are weaker

Than defeating

Two harmonious hearts.

13-

The Love and the Homeland

Are Siamese twins

They are similar

But homeland

Has forntiers

Whereas  love is boundless.

14-

The homeland is a soma

The love is a soul

When they unite

The rainbow of nationality

Is formed.

15-

What can I do

With a magic lamp?

I need not the giant

As long as you are in my heart.

16-

Before you settled in my heart

I didn't know

That my heart

Has another one.

17-

When my homeland

Tortured me

I killed it

And buried it

In my heart

But where can I bury it

When the rivulets

Of my heart get dry?

18-

I won't esteem my floods

We are both pointers

Of love clock

In the timeless.

 19-

Are you a toy?

Am I a child?

I can't slumber

Unless my eyelids

Cover you.

20-

Once in prayer

My soul shouted

Oh! God

Grant me a heart

Doesn't love

And forgive me

When I deviate

Since the heart

Which doesn't love

Doesn' know prayer.
