He was a child of the world,
Who used to dream of vast spaces,
Of new lands and uncharted oceans,
As he looked down on the ships
Steaming on the surface of the Mediterranean,
Which once carried Cadmus and Europa,
On their countless journeys,
He felt the urge to travel
To the four corners of the earth;
To see the wonders of creation,
The foreign lands and strange peoples,
Who inhabited other continents,
Who spoke other tongues than his own;
Who worshipped other gods
Than his unapproachable God.
Driven by this urge
His travels took him first
To a far-off island to the north,
Where life was orderly and quiet,
Where people minded their own business
